Wealth and Poverty in Proverbs (click to listen, right click to download)

“Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.” Proverbs 11:28 ESV

Whether we are rich or poor, we all face the same difficulties in life.  All of us will meet the Lord, and someone else will get the goods and riches we have accumulated.  Unfortunately, many who are well-to-do look down on the poor, blaming them or attributing their poverty to bad choices, laziness, or the “lack of responsibility”.  Jesus said it would be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven, because it is easy for them to trust in their riches, their accomplishments, or their worldly wisdom.  But none of those things will deliver a person when their life is over (Luke 12:13-21)  God gives us a responsibility to take care of the poor, and to seek contentment, not riches, because we look to God as our provider and sustainer.  We depend on his grace daily for our food, our health, and our shelter.

This message outlines two truths in Proverbs- We are warned against trusting in riches, because they are uncertain.  And we are given the responsibility of taking care of the poor, because it is a way to live out the gospel.  True riches and lasting wealth are found in Jesus Christ.
