The disciples asked Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray.” He answered them by giving what is now known as the Lord’s Prayer. Really, it is the disciples’ prayer- a prayer for anyone who is a follower of Jesus.
It can be prayed word for word, but to think that a prayer is effective because of specific words is to be guilty of the over-literalism Jesus warns against in Matthew 6:5-8.
When you know God as your heavenly Father- Abba- as Jesus calls him, then you come to him as a child would come and ask a parent for what he needs.
When we come to God, we need to recognize his position and his plan, repent of our sin, and request what we need- not only materially, but spiritually as well.
When we do this is humility and faith, we find that God does provide all we need from day to day. And more than that, we come to know him more day by day, moment by moment.
