Jesus tells his followers that he is the vine, and they are the branches. As they abide in him, they will experience his love and bear fruit. Part of abiding in Christ is resting in his love, choosing to be content with his provision, and obeying his commands because you know they are meant–not to burden you–but meant for your joy.
When our identity is based on Jesus and in his grace, then the love of Christ becomes the fuel for his mission. Jesus has chosen his followers and appointed them to go and bear fruit—something they can only do in his strength. As the apostle Paul wrote:
I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.
