Imagine a typical wedding faux pas:

–One of the wedding party fainting during the ceremony…

–An inappropriate toast by the best man…

–Bringing an uninvited guest along with you…

–Wearing the same dress as the brides maids when you are not a bride’s maid…

Wouldn’t it be just as odd for an invited guest to come to a wedding reception only to say: “No thanks, I won’t have anything to eat. I’m fasting.”

Jesus said that it was not time for his disciples to fast while he has with them.  Rather, it was a time for feasting or celebration.  What he was saying and demonstrating was that new life in God’s kingdom could not be contained in old forms of religious ritual.  New wine calls for new wineskins.  This message emphasizes the joy and new life Christ came to bring, and how Jesus the Messiah brings the inauguration of God’s kingdom.
