Jesus said, “I have come not to bring peace, but a sword.” Wait a minute, I thought Jesus was referred to as the Prince of Peace? Didn’t the angels declare at his birth, “Peace on earth?”
Yes, the purpose of Christ’s coming into the world was to bring peace between God and mankind; to reconcile mankind to God. But the result, the consequence, indeed the aftershocks of his coming to bring peace were that many people would be divided in their reactions against him. Simeon prophesied at his birth that he would be the cause of the rising and falling of many in Israel, a sign that would be spoken against. (Luke 2:29-36). And Jesus told people plainly that many families would be divided in their allegiance to him.

Following Christ will cost you a lot. Sometimes it will cost you in the form of relationships and allegiances. When Jesus said the greatest commandment was to love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength; a clear implication is that people would need to love other things or other people to a lesser degree than their Lord.
